A Shocking Tragedy
An accident that resulted fatally occurred near Swan Lake, Sunday. Ed. L. Ellis and Joe Seidle of this place were hunting and when at a point about four miles north of the village of Swan Lake, Seidle in taking a Winchester rifle out of the rear end of the buggy, was shot, the bullet passing through the body just below the heart. Ellis being unable to load the wounded man into the buggy, was compelled to leave him on the prairie until he could go to the village for assistance, when he was taken to the residence of Mr. Hawk, where he lingered until 8 o’clock Monday evening. Doctors Ballard and Myrick who were summoned, pronounced the wound fatal. The injured man even before the surgeons’ examination seemed convinced that he had received his death wound, and wished to have all of his associates and acquaintances come and see him before he died. As an employee of the Burlington company at the round house for nearly seven years, he was well known, and a host of friends visited the dying man, all of whom he bade goodbye. The remains were taken to Emmetsburg, Wednesday, for burial. Mrs. Seidle at the time of the accident was, with the children visiting relatives at Superior. Joseph Seidle was born in Germany about 38 years ago. He was an engineer, and had been in the employ of the B.C.R. & N. for a long time. Previous to coming to Iowa he had been employed on railways in the south serving his full time as fireman. His health gave out from frequent attacks of malarious diseases and he came north and from the change in climate derived great benefit. He has been on duty almost every day at the round house and in the yards since the Burlington was built to this place. He was married in Dickinson county to Mary Duffie [Duffy] of Superior, who with two children will have the sympathy of many friends in their great loss. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, April 19, 1889)It is said that the Seidle accident this week is the seventeenth that has occurred in this vicinity, all traced to the careless use of firearms, and nearly all occurring on Sunday. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, April 19, 1889)
The people of this place were shocked to hear of the sad accident on Sunday, that resulted in the death of Joe Seidle of Estherville on Monday. The sympathy of this community goes out to the relatives and friends of the bereaved family. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, April 19, 1889)
