N. P. Peterson
Nels P. Peterson, father of Gus T. Peterson, died at his son’s home in this city last Friday afternoon at 12:25. Mr. Peterson had been ailing for some time prior to his death. Gus T. Peterson took the remains to Ridgeport, Boone county, where the funeral services were held and the burial made. Mr. Peterson’s father and mother were buried there.N. P. Peterson was born in Sweden, February 15, 1925. He was married in 1940 and came to the United States in 1850, locating at Moline, Illinois. At this place he engaged in farming, and ran a saw-mill, until 1856 when he removed to Illinois and built a large flour mill. In 1854 he moved to Boone county and since this date he has been engaged in the saw-mill, farming and mercantile business in Boone and Hamilton counties. He came to Estherville in 1905 to live with his son, Gus T. Peterson.
Mr. Peterson leaves two sons, Gus T. Peterson, and John Peterson of Pilot Mound, besides a brother, Senator C. J. Erickson of Boone.
He was a sturdy pioneer, a noble character and an honorable citizen. His death is mourned by a large circle of friends. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, November 18, 1908)
Death of N. P. Peterson
Nels P. Peterson died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son, Gus T. Peterson, on south Eighth street, at the age of 83 years and 9 months after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Peterson was born at Nora Flacka, Kalmane Lau, Sweden, February 15, 1825, and came to this country in 1850 locating at Moline, Ill. He came to Iowa in 1868 residing in Boone and Hamilton counties for many years, coming to Estherville in 1905 and making his home with his son. The surviving children are Gus T. Peterson, of this city, and John A. Peterson, of Pilot Mound, Iowa. One brother, Senator C. J. A. Erickson, of Boone, also survives him. The remains were taken to Ridgeport, Iowa, Monday for burial beside his wife and father and mother. Deceased was a member of the Lutheran church. Mr. Nels P. Peterson, father of Gus T. Peterson, of this city, died at the home of his son at 12:25 p.m. Saturday, November 14th, of a complication of ailments. He was nearing his eighty-fourth birthday. The remains were taken to Bridgeport, Boone County Monday and funeral services held from the Swedish church in that town and the body buried in the cemetery beside his wife, father and mother. Deceased was born at Nora Flacka, Kalmare Lau, Sweden, February 15th, 1825. He was married in Sweden in 1847. In 1850 he came to the United States and located at Moline, Illinois, engaging in farming and running a saw mill until 1856 when he removed to Altona, Knox County, Illinois, and built a large steam flouring mill and also engaged in the mercantile business until 1865, when he sold out both the mill and store and moved back to Moline, Illinois. He was engaged in the mercantile business at Moline until 1868, when he came to Iowa, locating near Stratford and started a saw mill. He has resided in Boone and Hamilton counties since then until 1905 he came to Estherville and made his home with his son, Gus T. Peterson until his death. He was a man of sterling integrity, of excellent business ability and well liked by all who knew him. He has always professed Christianity, and since childhood has been a member of the Lutheran church. He is survived by two sons, Gus T. Peterson, of this city, John A. Peterson, of Pilot Mound, and a brother, Senator C. J. A. Erickson, of Boone, Iowa. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 18, 1908)
