Past Head Librarian Dies at 77
Lucile Peterson, 77, head librarian of the Estherville Public Library for 42 years, died today about 8:30 a.m. at the Good Samaritan Center where she had been a resident for a few months.Her death was attributed to a stroke. Miss Peterson had been in failing health for the past two years.
Margaret Lucile Peterson was born Jan. 14, 1889, in Estherville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus O. Peterson. She graduated in 1907 from Estherville High School and later took courses in library administration at the University of Iowa Library School. In 1922 she was granted a life certificate in library work from the Iowa Library Commission.
In 1963, Miss Peterson retired from her work as librarian for health reasons and was honored at an open house at the library.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Grace Episcopal Guild, a past member of P.E.O., a charter member of Wa-tan ye of which she was the first president, member of past presidents of Wa-tan-ye, a member of the Estherville Woman’s Club, and the Iowa Library Association, and former secretary of the library board.
Miss Peterson is survived by a brother, Russell O. Peterson of Estherville and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, five brothers and a sister.
Funeral services are to be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Rev. Charles Du Bois officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
