Ralph Miller Dies From Gas Effects
Ralph H. Miller, 74, of Algona, formerly of Estherville, died early this morning at St. Ann Hospital, Algona.Both he and Mrs. Miller have been in the Algona hospital since they were found Nov. 22 unconscious in their home as a result of carbon monoxide fumes. Mrs. Miller remains in critical condition.
Mr. Miller was born June 11, 1890, in Cass county. He was educated at Armstrong. From 1913 to 1916 he was a bookkeeper for the State Bank at Armstrong, and from 1916 to 1921 he was bookkeeper and later cashier for the First National Bank in Estherville.
He was married Sept. 20, 1921, to Hazel Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Thompson, Estherville. From 1921 to 1932 he was an examiner for the Iowa State Banking Department. Later he became president of the Iowa State Bank at Algona, from which he retired in 1952.
Mr. Miller enlisted in the army in 1917 and was attached to Company G, 349th Infantry, 88th Division, Des Moines. He was overseas for one year and was discharged in 1919 as a Second Lieutenant.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 90, past director of the Algona Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Algona Country Club, a Mason and a member of the Congregational Church. He was a past president of Algona Rotary club and was the main organizer of the Estherville Rotary club.
He enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his widow and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Lorenz, Estherville, and Mrs. Vern Smith, 3003 Leech Ave., Sioux City.
Funeral services are pending on the arrival of relatives. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 29, 1964)
