Elwyn Hansen, 23, died Friday [July 11, 1930] morning at dawn of septicemia after an illness of several weeks. He was working in Mason City when he became ill and came home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with the Rev. Arthur G. Bailey officiating. Burial was in Oakhill cemetery. Pall bearers were Glenn Kraniz, Frank Westbrook, Charles Clark, Burton Clark, Richard Morse and Francis Shadle.Elwyn Armstrong Hansen was born in Estherville May 4, 1907, and was educated in the local schools. He was a member of the class of 1926. For the past year he has been employed in the Marshall & Swift tailor shop, in Mason City. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Muriel Nelson, Merna and Eliza, and one brother, Robert.
In an unmailed letter to his mother he said: “I have reached both the beginning and the end, the beginning of happiness and the end of worry. After all there are but two real emotions in the human heart, love of God and that great thing which keeps the old world turning, love. I shall endeavor to be that person of whom I have made the pretense of being, happily. I look forward to the coming day that the old dread and the fear are gone, gone forever.”
Out-of-town relatives and friends who were present at the funeral were Mrs. G. W. Wheelock of Omaha, Mrs. P. Makaman of Colome, S.D., Myron Wheelock of Stanberry, Mo., and the following people from Mason City: Mr. Swift, A. J. Marshall, Mr. Grove, Bert Pluth, Mrs. Rose Johnson, Mrs. Lillian Dudley, Vivian Vorhes and Blanche Allen. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, July 17, 1930)
