Death Takes Young Boy
Harley Griffith Died This Morning After Two Weeks Illness
After an illness of two weeks Harley Griffith, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Griffith, passed away at Coleman hospital this (Thursday) morning at 10:00 o’clock. His death was caused from rheumatic fever which resulted in heart complications.

Harley was born in Estherville Jan. 23, 1926. He has spent all his life here with the exception of five years when his parents moved to Motley, Minn. He attended the Estherville public schools and at the time of his illness and death was a student in the eighth grade. He was an exceptionally good student and was a very popular member in his class and with the entire junior high school. He took a prominent part in all school activities with a cheerfulness and willingness that made him a favorite of all. His absence in the school will be greatly noticed by the faculty and student body and his place in the home can never be filled.

Besides his parents two brothers, Keith and Daryld and one sister, Phyllis survive him. Mr. Griffith is an engineer on the Rock Island railroad.

Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed awaiting word from distant relatives. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 19, 1940)

Services Were Held Sunday For Harley Griffith
Rev. Fred W. Sawyer officiated at the funeral service Sunday for Harley Griffith, 14, who passed away Thursday morning. The services were held at 2:00 o’clock at the Christian church and burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were friends and classmates of Harley’s in the junior high school. They were Gerald Schultes, Charles Jones, Jackie Nichols, Junior Booth, John Mason and Allen Nelson. Members of the Service Club of which he was a member, attended the funeral in a body.

Active pallbearers were Will Warrington, Ray Bryan, Floyd Lytle, Matt Scholtes, G. H. Stearns and Oden Wee. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 24, 1940)
