Paul Fuss of Sioux City Ia. Kills Self Sat.
Became Despondent Over a Bank Failure There
Formerly Lived Here
Moved to Sioux City Eighteen Years Ago to Operate Check Room
Paul fuss, formerly of this city, ended his life in Sioux City Saturday morning by firing a bullet into his brain. He was buried there Monday afternoon.

He is said to have brooded over the alleged loss of $1500, his life’s savings in a bank failure in Sioux City some months ago.

He left Estherville eighteen years ago, when he gave up his position as clerk in the Burlington hotel to operate a check room in a Sioux City hotel.

He was never married.

Mr. Fuss operated the check room independently and had made a success of it. And then when he lost his savings, he became despondent.

Word of the suicide reached here Saturday, and Charles Fuss, the deceased brother, left immediately in his auto. He has five other brothers: Joe and Frank, who also live her; William of Neligh, Nebraska; Louis of Minneapolis and Fred of Davenport. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, August 27, 1924)

Had Been Employed in Same Hotel for Eighteen Years – Had Many Friends Here
Word was received here Saturday afternoon of the death of Paul Fuss by his own hand at Sioux City where he had been employed at the West Hotel for the past eighteen years. He was a brother of Charlie, Frank and Joe Fuss, of this city, Louis Fuss, of Minneapolis, and William Fuss of Neligh, Neb. On receipt of the telegram Charlie Fuss left at once in his car for that place. Arrangements were being made for the funeral to be held here, but on arrival in Sioux City Charlie found the lodge to which Paul belonged had already made arrangements for the funeral and it was held Monday and interment made in the cemetery at that place. Deceased was born and raised in Estherville and well known to many Estherville people. He was an industrious young man and had saved his money, but the recent failure of a Sioux City bank took his life-long savings and he worried over the loss until he undoubtedly became deranged and ended his life by firing a bullet into his head. Employed for eighteen years by one firm is certainly a good recommendation for a young man like Paul Fuss. His services had evidently been satisfactory to his employers and his many Estherville friends regret to learn of his self-inflicted deed. The Fuss family were early settlers in Estherville and the father was proprietor of a shoe repair shop for many years. The mother later conducted an eating house on Lincoln street near the Thompson Café. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, August 27, 1924)

Note: Per draft record, Paul Peter Fuss was born October 27, 1878
