William Everts Dead
At nine o’clock Tuesday evening, May 29th, Death came to the relief of Wm. Everts, who has been a long but patient sufferer from consumption.

Death had been expected for some time, and yet relatives and friends had hoped for his recovery – in fact, he seemed to be improving of late. He was conscious up to the time of his death, and passed away peacefully and without a struggle. Deceased was only 28 years of age and during his residence in Estherville had made many friends. He contracted consumption about three years ago and as usual the dread disease baffled the skill of the best physicians. He leaves a father, wife and son to mourn his death. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Christian church. Rev. Gregory officiates. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, May 31, 1900)

Wilber [William] Everts was born Dec. 9, 1871, in Marshall county, Kansas, and died in Estherville, Iowa, May 29, 1900. He was the last of three children born to Alonzo and Julia Everts. He leaves an aged father now in his seventieth year, a young widow and one child, a boy about five years old. Mr. Everts was a barber and had built up a nice trade. About fifteen months ago his health began to fail. He sold his shop and was appointed city weighmaster, hoping that change of work would restore him to health. As the disease continued to grow worse his friends, the Fraternal Brotherhood of the World and the Estherville Fire Company and citizens made up a purse and sent him to Colorado. This also failed to work a cure and he returned to be cared for and die among friends. He was indeed a patient and hopeful sufferer. Like so many sufferers of that dread consumption, he entertained hope of health and better days to the very last.

The funeral was held in the Christian church of which the deceased was a member and the sermon was delivered by the pastor, Rev. H. Morton Gregory. Prayer was offered by Rev. M. D. Bevan of the Baptist. The Fraternal Brotherhood of the World furnished the pall bearers and were present in a body, so also was the Estherville Fire Company and the Woman’s Relief Corps of Vandenburg Post. The brotherhoods, citizens and churches deserve great credit for the sympathy and assistance shown toward this suffering destitute man and his family. Wm. Everts had $1,000 life insurance in the Modern Woodmen of the World. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, June 7, 1900)

Mrs. William Everts has received the $1,000 insurance which her deceased husband carried with the Fraternal Brotherhood of the World. A check arrived just seven days after his death. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 13, 1900)

Note: although William Everts is not listed in the Oak Hill Cemetery Records, other Everts family members are buried there, so it seems likely that this is where he is buried.
