A Good Mother Called to Rest
Mrs. H. H. Espeset Was One of Emmet County’s Pioneers – Funeral Held Yesterday
In the death of Mrs. H. H. Espeset Emmet county lost another pioneer settler who was respected and esteemed by the entire community. Mrs. Espeset practically spent her entire life in this neighborhood and her dearest friends were those who had known her longest. She lived a good life and has been called to her reward. She lived her life well and gave to the world a splendid family of sons and daughters who will perpetuate the memory of her life. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Norwegian Lutheran church of this city. Rev. Berge officiated at the last side rites. Burial was made in the Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery north of this city. The Vindicator and Republican joins many friends and loved one in mourning the loss of this good woman. Following is the obituary as handed to us:Mrs. H. H. Espeset was born in Norway in 1843 and came to the United States with her parents at the age of three years.
A few years later she came with her parents to Emmet county, settling on a farm in High Lake township. Her father, Mr. Tolaf Espeset was one of the earliest settlers of Emmet county.
After reaching womanhood she was united in marriage to Mr. Peter Larson of Allamakee county where she resided until the death of her husband. Afterwards she returned to Emmet county to be near her brother, Mr. Knut Espeset. In 1874 she was married to Mr. H. H. Espeset and moved to a farm three miles south of Estherville where she resided until her death and where she raised a splendid family of six daughters and four sons, as follows: Lewis A. Larson, of St. Paul; T. F. Larson of Foley, Minnesota; Peter T. Larson and A. R. Espeset of Estherville; Otis Espeset of Eveleth, Minnesota; Walter H. Espeset of Cawley, Wyoming; Mrs. C. J. Wendt of Duluth; Mrs. Enas Mills of Granada, Minnesota; Mrs. W. W. Kelly of Duluth; and Mrs. J. S. Newlan of Bishop, California.
There are twenty living grandchildren and one dead. She is also survived by her husband. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 15, 1919)
Mrs. H. H. Espeset Dies at Granada
Pioneer Settler Dies at the Home of Her Daughter at Granada, Minnesota
At 10:45 o’clock on the morning of October 10th occurred the death of one of Emmet county’s oldest settlers, Mrs. H.H. Espeset. Mrs. Espeset passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Enos Mills, near Granada, Minnesota.Mrs. Espeset was born in Norway, in 1843, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tolef Espeset, and was nearly 76 years of age at the time of her death. She came to this country with her parents when three years old. She was married to Peter Larson in Allamakee county, and upon his death in 1873 came to Emmet county to be near her brother, Knut Espeset, long deceased.
In 1874 she was married to H. H. Espeset, and the farm three miles southeast of Estherville is the place where her large family was raised, and which has been her home since.

Wendt, of Duluth, Mrs. Will Kielly and Tollef Larson of Duluth; Mr. and Mrs. Enos Mills, of Granada, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Hendrickson and Mr. Elizabeth Hendrickson of Waterville, Iowa. Mrs. H. H. Espeset
Another of Emmet county’s pioneer residents, passed away at the home of her daughter on Friday, Oct. 10. Mrs. Espeset was born in 1845 in Norway and came to this country with her parents at the age of three years. She was the daughter of Tollef Espeset, one of the earliest settlers of Emmet county, and a sister of Knut Espeset, who was at one time for years the sheriff of the county, and well known politically in the early days. After the death of her first husband, Peter Larson, in Allamakee county, she moved to Emmet county in 1873 to be near her brother. In 1874 she was united in marriage to H. H. Espeset and they have resided on what is known as the Espeset farm three miles southeast of this city.Mrs. Espeset was a good Christian woman who was a great home body. [?] who raised a large family and [?] well for hem and one who will be greatly missed by them and her friends.
She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, H. H. Espeset, Granada, Minn.; sons, Lewis A. Larson of St. Paul, T. T. Larson of Foley, Minn., Peter T. Larson of Estherville, Iowa, A. R. Espeset of Estherville, Iowa, Otis Espeset of Everett, Minn.; Walter H. Espeset of Cawley, Wyo.; and daughters, Mrs. C. J. Wendt of Duluth; Mrs. Enos Mills of Granada, Minn.; Mrs. W. W. Kelley of Duluth, Mrs. I. S. Newlan of Bishop, Cal.; and twenty-one grandchildren.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the Norwegian Lutheran church of this city, the Rev. S. A. Berge officiating. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 15, 1919)
