Former Estherville Business Woman has Fatal Operation Monday; Burial There
Telegraphic message received today by Mrs. H. O. Sillge, brought the sad news of the unexpected death at Long Beach, Calif., of Mrs. Myrtle [Brooks] Eldred, former business woman of Estherville. Mrs. Eldred had submitted to an operation for appendicitis at 4:40 p.m. yesterday and passed away at 9:30 last night.Mr. Eldred and her children, Elizabeth, Lester and George left this city approximately 15 years ago, going first to Des Moines and later to the west coast. The boys reside at home and Beth is married to Ira Calhoun. There are a grandson and granddaughter.
The deceased woman had come to Estherville as a bride, her husband being a jeweler here. He passed away about 35 years ago and the responsibility for the care of the family rested on the mother. She opened and managed a millinery store for many years sending her two sons and daughter through the local schools before they moved away. Friends estimate that she was about 65 years old (Per 1930 census, DOB 1878) at the time of her death.
Burial will be made at Long Beach. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 29, 1938)
