Lt. Egertson Phones Family From Japan
Lt. Coleman Egertson telephoned his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Egertson last night and it was a long-distance call – a very long distance call.Lieutenant Egertson is stationed in Japan and had just received a cablegram from his mother telling him of the death of his grandmother, Mrs. Isaac Coleman. Although he was not at his usual station, Sendai, he received the message at Camp Haugen, on the north point of the main island.
He immediately put in a telephone call to his home and the phone in the Egertson home rang at 2:05 a.m. today. After a wait of only 15 minutes Mrs. Egertson was talking with her son half way around the world Coleman asked what time it was in Estherville and Mrs. Egertson said it was 2:30 a.m. Thursday. He said it was 6:20 p.m. Thursday in Japan.
Mr. Egertson also talked with his son and told him details of his grandmother’s death. Lt. Egertson had not had mail from home for six days so did not know that Mrs. Coleman had broken her hip the week before. The conversation could be heard clearly both in Estherville and in Japan.
Earlier in the evening Pvt. Jack Egertson had called form Fort Leonard Wood where he is stationed. He said he would be unable to be here for his grandmother’s funeral but told his parents he was glad he had been home last weekend and had been able to see and visit with her on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Sandin funeral home with the Rev. Thomas G. Melton of the Presbyterian church officiating. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 12, 1951)
