Mrs. Dyke Was Descendent of Zachary Taylor
Funeral services for Mrs. Ludema J. Dyke, 92, of Estherville, were held at 2 p.m. Feb 17 at the Sternborg chapel with the Rev. H. Hughes Dill officiating.

Burial was in Oakhill cemetery. Pall bearers are Charles Bixby, Harry Jones, Adam Beiber, all of Estherville, Russell Tow, Fred Hasbrook and Edward Nauss of Superior.

Mrs. Dyke broke her hip last Nov. 26 and had been bedfast since that time. She died at 11:50 a.m. Feb 14 at Holy Family hospital of a stroke.

Born Aug. 21, 1861, in Steamboat Rock, she received her education there and married Adelbert Dyke there on March 4, 1878. Mr. Dyke worked as a farmer and carpenter in Dickinson county and moved to Estherville in 1906. She was a direct descendent of Gen. Zachary Taylor, twelfth president of the United States.

Loving children, her home was noted for the gathering of children and teenagers. Many persons who grew up around her home still remember the pans of popped corn and plates of taffy she served and many small hands were warmed by mittens she knit.

A lover of poetry she entertained friends on her 91st birthday last year by reciting lengthy poems.

Surviving her death are a daughter, Mrs. A. R. Markley of Estherville; a sister, Mrs. Alice Williams of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Mrs. Harold Graff of Superior at one time made her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dyke.

Mrs. Dyke’s husband preceded her in death about 25 years ago.

Persons from out of town who attended the funeral of Mrs. Dyke are Mrs. Robert Hagen, Florence Dyke, Mahlong Dyke and Marvin Dyke, all of Plaza, N.D.; Mrs. William Stuard of Jackson, Mich.; Bob Graff of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs. Mary Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Taylor of Eldora; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Taylor of Osceola, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. William Hively of Emmetsburg; Mr. and Mrs. John Markley and Mrs. Julius Hennley of Shaller; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Albert of Montgomery and Charles Bixby and Shirley of Spirit Lake. Mrs. Ludema Dyke, 92, Dies at Estherville
Superior – Mrs. Ludema Dyke of Estherville, a pioneer resident of the Superior community, died at the Holy Family hospital shortly before non Sunday, February14. She was 92 years of age.

She had been hospitalized since last Thanksgiving when she had broken her hip in a fall at her home. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, February 18, 1954)
