Had Been in Good Health Although Seventy-Nine Years of Age – A Pioneer

Chester A. Cole died very suddenly at his home on North Second street Sunday afternoon at four o’clock. He had been in perfect health and had not even complained of aches of pains, although seventy-nine years of age. He ate a hearty Sunday dinner and laid down on the couch for a little after dinner sleep. At four o’clock he arose and went to the coal house for a bucket of coal. He did not return as soon as expected and Mrs. Cole went out to look for him and found him dead. He had evidently been stricken with heart failure and died instantly.

Chester A. Cole was a familiar figure on the streets of Estherville. He was a man of exemplary habits and a friend of all who knew him. He had been a resident of this city for many years and by his industry and kind-hearted disposition won the admiration of all who came in daily contact with him. He was as honest as the day is long and always cautious never to say anything that would cast reflections or injure the feelings of his neighbors in any way.

Deceased was born in Vermont [possibly Sharkboro]. He resided at Waupon, Wis., and Hampton, Iowa, for many years before coming to Estherville. He was married while at Waupon, but his wife died twelve years ago. Three years later he married Mrs. Geo. Scharfenberg and they lived happily together. He had three children from his first wife, one of whom is living, Mrs. Etta Roach, Wichita, Kansas. A sister, Mrs. Stella Green, resides at Spencer. He was uncle to D. H. Adams. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Union Baptist church, and the remains interred in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, September 20, 1922)
