Obituary – Charles H. Coon
Charles H. Coon was born in Estherville, Iowa, October 26, 1869, and received his formal education in the Estherville schools.

On May 30, 1891 he was united in marriage to Sadie Berhow, also of Estherville in a ceremony performed here.

Mr. Coon has been a life-long resident of Estherville. He was in the grocery business here for about 25 years, first in the Coon block, which was destroyed by fire and later on South Sixth Street where he operated a grocery store in partnership with his son. He retired in 1928. His father, Henry Coon built the Coon block here, thus the family name is one well-established in this community.

Four children came to bless the home, two of whom, a son and a daughter preceded him in death. Survivors include his widow, one son, Floyd C. Coon of Los Angeles, and a daughter, Evelyn, now Mrs. Alva Ragsdale, of Southgate, California. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. E. I. Sondrol and Mrs. A. H. Davidson, both of Estherville; five grandsons, Frederick Coon of Lake Park; Claire Coon of Los Angeles; Charles, Larry and Jimmy Ragsdale of Southgate, and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Coon was a member of this Church, and in conversations with his pastor expressed real interest in its welfare even during hours of great physical suffering. His patient endurance of suffering without necessary complaint was an inspiration to all who knew him. In this his daughter Gladys had shown great likeness to him. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 6, 1947)
