James Coon Dies at 89; Rites Set
James A. Coon, 89, retired farmer and resident of Emmet County since 1893, died yesterday about 4:30 p.m. at Holy Family Hospital. Death was attributed to complications of advanced age.Born June 17, 1872 in Dodge County, Wis., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Frank Coon. He lived in Wisconsin until 1893 when he came to this county and began farming in the area.
He was married Jan. 1, 1902 to Christina Ruckman at the farm home of her parents located three miles northwest of Estherville.
Mr. and Mrs. Coon farmed in the Estherville area until his retirement after which they moved to a home on N. 6th St. in Estherville. Mrs. Coon died June 3, 1961 and after her deth Mr. Coon sold the home and moved to the Simpson Rest Home where he lived until March 14 when he was admitted to Holy Family Hospital.
Mr. Coon was a longtime member of First Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, by his parents, five brothers and five sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Several nieces and nephews survive his death.
Funeral services are to be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home, 208 S. 9th St., the Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call at Sandin-Fuhrman’s from Wednesday afternoon until time of the services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 20, 1962)
