Anna Louise Gullixson was born Aug. 30, 1867, in Delano township in Humboldt county, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole H. Gullixson. Her parents were among the first settlers in Humboldt county, coming there in 1865 from Wisconsin.
Mrs. Brown attended elementary schools in Humboldt county and attended high school in Fort Dodge. She then went to Humboldt college in Humboldt, an early pioneer college that is no longer in operation.
Following completion of her education, she taught school in Humboldt county up to the time of her marriage. She was married about 1887 to Ariel C. Brown. The couple lived in West Bend where Mr. Brown and a partner established the first bank there.
The Browns moved to Estherville in 1900 where Mr. Brown was associated in the wholesale implement business at a location where the Jerry Wegs service station now is.
The Browns first built a house on Central avenue (street address now is 1424 central) and a few years later built the large stone house which now houses the Veterans club. Mr. Brown, shortly after coming to Estherville, purchased approximately 25 acres bordering what is now Central avenue but at the time was a wheat field. Central avenue then didn’t extend that far east.
Mrs. Brown was confirmed in the Lutheran church.
She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, was past worthy matron and secretary of the Estherville chapter and was awarded a 50-year pin which she prized highly.
Survivors include two daughters and two sons, Hazel Brown of Gilmore City, Mrs. W. C. Hagens of Berkley, Calif., N. K. Brown of Estherville and Lee Brown of Gilmore City; five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Henry Ries of Laurens.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1936. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 14, 1951)
