Estherville, IA – George C. Allen, 92, senior editor of the Enterprise Publishing company of Estherville was treated Friday for a fractured hip suffered when he fell at the home of his son, Kirt. George C. Allen, 92, senior editor of the Estherville Enterprise, died at Estherville Friday [May 22, 1942] evening as the result of a fall in the home of his son, Kirt, Thursday, in which his hip was fractured.Mr. Allen had been in ill health for several months, and had suffered several other falls. The injured hip had been fractured previously when he was struck by an automobile several years ago.
Mr. Allen was born January 25, 1859, in Toledo, Ohio, and came west at the age of 19, settling in Fort Dodge, where he entered the shoe business.
He came by team to Estherville Aug. 12, 1870.
He served as railroad ticket agent for 10 years, was elected county auditor, and served as postmaster. He and his son, Kirt, purchased the Enterprise in 1913.
Mr. Allen is survived by his son, Kirt, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Kirt Allen home on Monday. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, May 28, 1942)
Estherville Editor Died From Injuries
George C. Allen, 92, senior editor of the Estherville Enterprise, died late Friday night after a hip injury he received Thursday at the home of his son and partner, Curt Allen. Funeral services were held Monday. Rev. Fred Ortmeyer, of the Estherville Methodist Lutheran church, officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Estherville.Mr. Allen had been in declining health for some time but he quite regularly came to the Enterprise office where he spent much of his time reading and renewing old acquaintances. He was born at Toledo, Ohio, in January, 1850. When he was 19 years of age he settled at Fort Dodge where he entered the shoe business. Mr. Allen located at Estherville in 1870. He was ticket agent for the B.R. &N. railway for 10 years and later served six terms as Emmet county auditor. He then entered the newspaper business with his son Curt. He served as postmaster at Estherville for several terms. (Democrat, Emmetsburg, IA, May 28, 1942)
