Hylus Allen was born June 23, 1859 in Fillmore county, Minn. When he was seven years old his family moved by ox team to Loon Lake, Jackson county, Minn. Mr. Allen was married to Caroline Lucas March 3, 1882 near Spirit Lake. For the past 28 years Mr. Allen has lived in Estherville and Lake Park. He lived in Estherville for the past nine years. Mr. Allen, 83, died at 1 p.m. Thursday [September 17, 1942] at the Coleman hospital. Death resulted after a two-day illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:15 at the Sternborg funeral home and at 2:30 at the Baptist church. The Rev. G. E. Forssell officiated at the services. Music was provided by the Baptist church choir and burial was made at the Oak Hill cemetery.
Mr. Allen is survived by his widow, one son, Harry T. Allen of Loon Lake, Minn. who lives on the old homestead and three daughters, Mrs. Dick Brown of Estherville, Mrs. Frank Doughty of Estherville, and Mrs. Horace G. Wood of Lake Park. Two children died in infancy. He is also survived by a half-sister, Mrs. Ida Richardson of Zion City, Ill. and 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Hylus Allen, 83, of Estherville, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday at the Coleman hospital, following a two day illness.Funeral services were held at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the Sternborg Funeral home and at 2:30 at the Baptist church in Estherville. The Rev. G. E. Forssel officiated at the services. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
Mr. Allen had been in his usual good health until Tuesday evening when he was taken ill. He had been visiting in Lake Park for 8 days at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Horace G. Wood.
On the same day as Mr. Allen’s death, a great granddaughter was born, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson of near Gruver.
