Had Been Ill Only Short Time – Funeral Held on Wednesday

Mrs. Mary Ethel Wilson, 48, wife of J. E. Wilson and prominent in lodge and social circles passes away at the hospital here Monday [June 12, 1933] morning after a week’s illness. She had been taken to the hospital a week ago Sunday with what was thought to be a threatened attack of quinsy. Her condition took a turn for the worse Friday. Four doctors were called in consultation but no relief was found and the end came at six o’clock Monday.

The immediate cause of her death was an embolus.

Mrs. Wilson was born May 5, 1885 in Kansas and came to Estherville 15 years ago. During her residence here she had affiliated with several lodge groups including the Eastern Star, White Shrine, Rebekah and Royal Neighbors. She was chaplain of the Eastern Star, a past worthy high priestess of the Shrine and a past noble grand of the Rebekah’s. She was also holding the office of R.S. to Noble Grand in that lodge. She took an active part in the work of the Methodist church.

She was acting as secretary for coming Rebekah convention.

Funeral service will be held from the Methodist church tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon at two o’clock with Rev. W. A. WinterStein in charge. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. Members of all the lodges to which Mrs. Wilson belonged will attend in bodies. Services at the grave will be conducted by the White Shrine.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by her husband and two children, Woodrow and Pauline, five sisters, Mrs. William Bryant, Mrs. Raymond Wiley and Mrs. R. P. Smith of Holton, Kansas, Mrs. R. B. Crone of Courtland, Kansas and Mrs. Lois Clark of Wyoming. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 13, 1933)

Mrs. J. E. Wilson Passed Away Suddenly on Monday, Last
The community was certainly saddened and shocked by the announcement on Monday of the sudden death of Mrs. J. E. Wilson, wife of the owner of the Estherville Steam Bakery. No one seemed to realize she was seriously ill. It was known she had been taken to the open hospital for treatment but it was not thought her condition was serious.

Mrs. Wilson is well known in church, lodge and social circles in this city. She was an active worker in the Methodist Church and with her home and other duties she always seemed to have extra time to attend to church activities and this was also the case in the orders she was connected with. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Eastern Star and held the chairs in that order. She was a member of the White Shrine, Rebekahs and Royal Neighbors and held offices in all these orders and was the secretary of the Rebekah convention to be held in this city.

She had been looking forward to a rest at their new cottage on Spirit Lake this season, which had just been completed at the time of her death.

Mary Ethel Elliott was born, the fourth daughter in a family of eight girls, near Coldwater, Kansas, on May 9, 1886, and died just after daybreak on Monday morning last, June 12, 1933. Her parents, David Newell Elliott and Emily Jane Morgan Elliott, were both born at Humphrey, Kentucky, where they were married on September 1, 1878. Their honeymoon was spent in a covered wagon train with which they and three other bridal couples, with ox teams made the six weeks journey from the old home neighborhood to Comanche County, Kansas, where they had already located homesteads.

Mrs. Wilson grew to womanhood at Coldwater. She married on January 27, 1906, to J. E. Wilson, at Osborne, Kansas. They made their first home at Osborne and after seven years moved to Sanborn, Iowa. Fifteen years ago they removed from Sanborn to Estherville which has since continuously been their home. The two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson – Albert Woodrow and Emily Pauline – are both at home.

Mrs. Wilson gave unstintedly of her effort and time in many forms of community service. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs, a member of the Eastern Star and Past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine. During all the years of her residence in Estherville Mrs. Wilson has been a member of the Woman’s Club and is a Past President and now Treasurer of the Parent Teachers Association. Mrs. Wilson was a most efficient president of our church Ladies Aid Society, and for some years and at the time of her death president of our chorus choir. She will be greatly missed in our community life – not alone for her ready and helpful service but as well for her always cheerful attitude. We will remember what she did and we will never forget what she was. At an early age Mrs. Wilson became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and through the years her services in and to the church increase in value.

Her husband, both her children and five sisters, Mrs. Vera Riley, Mrs. Beatrice Bryan, Mrs. Bessie Smith, of Holton, Kansas; Mrs. Annie Krohn, of Courtland, Kansas; and Mrs. Edith Clark, of Cora, Wyoming, survive her. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 1, 1933)
