Fred White, President of Northern, Dies
Fred Jay White, 77, president of the Northern Lumber company and longtime Estherville resident died today at 12:25 p.m. at his home in Estherville. Death was caused by heart disease and paralytic stroke, with complications. He had been hospitalized since June.White came to Estherville in 1904 from Forest City where he had been treasurer of the Northern Lumber company office in that city. The lumber company has general offices in Estherville with seven branch offices in northern Iowa and dealerships in farm implements.
In addition to being president of Northern, he was organizer of Company D of the Iowa national guard and was a captain in that organization, was organizer of the Lehigh Sewer Pipe and Tile company of Fort Dodge, a past president and director of the Chamber of Commerce in Estherville, and one of the organizers of the Estherville Golf and Country club, a member of the Elks lodge and of Grace Episcopal church.
He was born Sept. 3, 1874 in Grand Island, Neb., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. White, and received his education in the public schools of Grand Island and also in Omaha.
He was married April 24, 1901, to Susan Spaulding of Sioux City and for awhile was associated with his father in an insurance business in Omaha before going to Forest City in 1903 to work with the Northern Lumber company.
Survivors include his wife, three children, a son, James S. White of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Mrs. George W. Thompson of Estherville and Mrs. Gilbert Avery of San Antonio, Tex.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lew Marshall.
