Rites For Mrs. Welsh
Funeral Services for Emmet County Pioneer Lady Held This (Tues.) P.M.

Mrs. James Welsh, passed away December 6th, at 2:40 o’clock at her home in Jack Creek township following an illness. Several months ago Mrs. Welsh contracted a cold which settled in her head and resulted in an abscess at the base of her brain. During her illness she has suffered greatly but has always borne her affliction with patience that has been most commendable.

Funeral services will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the home with the Rev. G. Arthur Baley, of Tracy, Minn., officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery with the Emmet Chapter O.E.S. No. 223, of Armstrong in charge of the services at the grave. Pallbearers will be Charles Jackson, Chester Torreson, Otis Jorstad, H. L. Thompson, Nels Peterson and Henry Hansen.

Helen Hunter Ferguson was born August 18, 1861 in Bechim, Scotland. When a young lady she was united in marriage to James Welsh, also of Bechim. The couple came to Emmet County in 1886 settling on a farm in Jack Creek township which they had purchased from the Scottish-American Land Company, who had their headquarters in Emmetsburg. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Welsh, all of whom survive their mother. They are Miss Helen Welsh, Eliza, to sons, John, Jas. Welsh and Miss Anna Welsh, all at home, Mrs. Sam Skow, of Lamberton, Minn., and Mrs. C. R. Ellerston, of Ringsted. Mr. Welsh passed away on January 20, 1938.

A large family and the many duties of the pioneer wife and mother kept Mrs. Welsh busy at her home during her younger years. In spite of this, however, she still found time for neighborly visits and to take part in the community affairs.

Besides her children, Mrs. Welsh is survived by one sister in Scotland and one grandson, James Ellerton [Ellerston]. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 9, 1941)
