Alfred Van Valkenberg Dies at 89
Alfred L. Van Valkenburg, 89, resident of Estherville for 46 years, died at 6:55 a.m. today at Holy Family hospital of pneumonia. He became ill of influenza which later developed into pneumonia. He had been hospitalized for a month.Mr. Van Valkenburg was born April 28, 1862, at Dubuque and lived in Dubuque and Storm Lake before moving to Estherville. He was married to Rose Emma Keller Feb. 19, 1872 [1892?], who preceded him in death Jan. 31. 1943.
When he first came to Estherville he worked for several years for L. L. Bingham, then had an interest in a feed business for several years. He then worked for the city of Estherville for 20 years as a gas maker at the municipal gas plant.
He is survived by six sons, James W., Ray, Myron and Harry of Estherville, George of Gerber, Calif., and Fred of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Anderson of Estherville and Mrs. George Bradley of Salinas, Calif., 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A son and daughter preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2:15 p.m. Thursday at the Sandin funeral home with the Rev. Clyde Leeds of the Christian church officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call at Sandin’s beginning Wednesday noon until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 1, 1951)
