Illness Is Fatal to Aged Lady
Mrs. S. Tangen Breaks Hip in Fall Dec. 20, Pneumonia Develops – Funeral To Be Held Thursday

Mrs. Simon Tangen, a resident of Estherville for 33 years died early Monday morning at the Coleman hospital of pneumonia. Mrs. Tangen had been confined to the hospital since Dec. 20 with a broken hip sustained in a fall on the icy sidewalk. She had withstood the shock of the ordeal quite well although frail, but contracted pneumonia last Sunday.

Anna Maria Moe was born at Decorah on December 13, 1872, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andre Moe. She was married at Decorah on Feb. 11, 1896. They lived at Newell for 6 years and came to Estherville in 1902 where the family had continued to reside. The husband passed away on Dec. 20, 1930.

Surviving the death of this esteemed woman are two daughters, Miss Mayme Tangen, a teacher at the state teachers college at Boulder, Colo., and Miss Alice Tangen, nurse in the Dr. M. T. Morton office, one sister, Mrs. R. J. Meland of Minneapolis and two brothers Henry Moe of Valley City, S.D., and Otto Moe of Decorah.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at one thirty from the home and at two o’clock from the Estherville Lutheran church. Rev. L. A. Mathre will be in charge.

Mrs. Tangen was devoted to her home and family, giving unstintingly of her love and labor. She was a kindly neighbor and active in the work of her church. Anna Marie Moe was born December 13, 1872, at Glenwood, near Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Moe. As a child she was baptized at the Glenwood Lutheran church where she later was confirmed and married. Her marriage took place February 11th, 1896, to Simon Tangen. They first took up their residence at Newell, Iowa. After living there for six years they came to Estherville some 34 years ago. Two daughters, Mayme and Alice, were born to them. Mr. Tangen died December 20, 1930. Mrs. Tangen continued to live at their home on south Sixth street together with Alice, a nurse in Dr. Morton’s office. Mrs. Tangen fell on the icy sidewalk two months ago and sustained a fractured hip. She was doing very well, however, at the Coleman hospital until she became ill with pneumonia which with complications caused her death Monday morning, February 4th at 7 a.m. She had then reached the age of 62 years, one month and 21 days. She leaves to mourn the departure of a kind and tender mother, the daughters, Mayme of Boulder, Colo.; and Alice of Estherville; a sister, Mrs. R. J. Melend of Minneapolis, and brothers, Otto of Decorah, and Henry of Valley City, N.D. She has been preceded in death by both of her parents and three brothers. The funeral was held Thursday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 at the Estherville Lutheran church. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 13, 1935)
