Rites for Mrs. Smith Tuesday
Services for Local Lady
Passed Away in California
Will Be Held at 2 p.m. at Methodist Church

Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer will officiate at the funeral services for Mrs. P. H. Smith to be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith had accompanied her daughter, Miss Ruth Smith, local mathematics instructor, to California to spend the summer. She was taken ill while visiting in Long Beach and passed away there last Tuesday [June 17, 1941]. The body was returned by train to Worthington where it was met by the Mahlum and Anderson funeral coach. Miss Smith drove back from California returning here Monday.

The sudden death of Mrs. Smith came as a great shock to her many friends in this city. Ever active and alert she was one of this city’s most outstanding woman, taking a vital interest in all the activities of the community. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church and took an active part in all its organizations and societies. Although her health during the past few months had not been the best her condition was not considered serious and it was thought a trip to California and a change of climate and surroundings would be of great benefit.

Mrs. Smith was born at Knoxville, Iowa, Oct. 18, 1866. On March 14, 1888, she was married at Knoxville. The family continued to reside there until June, 1910, when they moved to a farm near Spirit Lake. They moved to Estherville in the fall of 1920 and have made their home here since then.

Mr. Smith passed away in November, 1932. Mrs. Smith is also preceded in death by one son, who died in January, 1929.

Surviving are her daughter, Miss Ruth Smith and one granddaughter, Miss Betty Smith, in Washington, D.C. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 24, 1941)
