Longtime Resident Dies at 83
William Gehial Swartz, 83, longtime Emmet County resident died early this morning at the Lauritsen Nursing Home of complication of old age. He had been in failing health since suffering a broken hip in March, 1961.

Mr. Swartz was born Sept. 9, 1879 in Winona, Ill., the son of Albert and Ella Swartz. He received his education in the LaSalle County, Ill. Schools.

Mr. Swartz came to Emmet County in 1899 with his parents and they settled on a farm southeast of Wallingford. He farmed in several areas in the county during his lifetime, retiring in 1943.

He was married on Feb. 11, 1912 to Della Elkins in Estherville. His wife preceded him in death in 1952.

Mr. Swartz was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include three step-daughters, two step-sons and two brothers, Ira and Leslie Swartz, both of Estherville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Sternborg-Reese Chapel with Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home from 9 a.m. Sunday until time of service. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 5, 1963)
