Emmet County Deputy Sheriff Died Suddenly
Was Victim of Heart Attack
(Estherville Daily News)
Cloyd F. Stevens, 52, Emmet county deputy sheriff, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday [May 9, 1948] from a heart attack.

Stevens had suffered a previous attack near the end of 1946 at which time he gave up his job at the Estherville airport. Last fall he was again in good health and he accepted the position of deputy sheriff under M. E. Huckaba upon the resignation of Linn Foderberg.

He just returned to Estherville a week ago from a trout fishing trip, and apparently had become exhausted on the trip, as he told Mrs. Stevens. He didn’t feel at all well during the past week.

Funeral services were held at the Sternborg chapel at 2 and at the Methodist church at 2:30. The Rev. C. J. Semans officiated. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Peggy, 15, three brothers, Harold, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; James of Estherville, and Leslie of Boyd, Minn., and two sisters, Mabel Planner of Boyd and Mrs. Earl Martin of Mound, Minn. His parents and three brothers preceded him in death.

He was born November 7, 1895, at Wall Lake. The family moved to Langdon in Clay county in 1901, and from there to Canada in 1911. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, he returned to this country and enlisted in the Navy.

After the end of the war he came to Estherville, where he worked for the Rock Island. In 1924 he married Viola Brown at her parents’ home in Estherville. In 1927 he left the railroad and worked as a mechanic in various garages throughout the city, and finally established his own shop. He joined the staff at the Estherville airport in 1946 and worked there until he suffered his first heart attack. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, May 13, 1948)
