E. I. Sondrol Dies in California
Passed to His Reward Thursday Afternoon, March 23
Funeral Here Thursday Afternoon
To Be Held From Presbyterian Church. In Charge of Masonic Lodge With Knight Templar EscortThe telegram that reached here Friday morning announcing the death of E. I. Sondrol in Los Angeles, California where he was spending the winter with his wife, was a great shock to this community where he has resided for over thirty years, most of the time being engaged in the mercantile business.
His health has not been the best the past few years, but no one realized that his ailment was of such a serious character. Even he did not consider that he had any organic malady and refused to consult medical advice. The immediate cause of his death was diabetes and other kidney complications. The body reached here this morning accompanied by his wife and son. Funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in charge of North Star lodge No. 447 A.F. and A.M., with a Knight Templar escort. The Elks will also assist in the services.
Mr. Sondrol was one of Estherville’s most highly respected citizens. For about twenty-five years he was engaged in the mercantile business but retired from active duties about seven years ago. Since that time he and his wife have spent the winters in Los Angeles, California. He was a member of all of the Masonic bodies of this city, including Esdraelon Commandery and the Eastern Star, and was also a member in good standing of Estherville Lodge No. 528 B.P.O. Elks. He was 67 years of age.
Obituary will be published next week. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 29, 1916)

E. I. Sondrol Dies In California
Well Known Resident Succumbs to Ravages of Disease at Winter Home in Los AngelesThe citizens of Estherville received a severe shock last Thursday when it was announced that our old pioneer resident and highly respected citizen, E. I. Sondrol, had passed away in Los Angeles, California, where he and his wife had been spending the winter. Mr. Sondrol has been spending the winters for the past few years in that state, and it has not seemed to his friends that the climate agreed with him. Some few years ago he became afflicted with diabetes, and has been gradually failing. It was not thought, however, that he was in a serious condition.
Mr. Sondrol was born in Valders, Norway, on the 13th day of January, 1850. He came to the United State in June, 1871, and settled first in Decorah, Iowa In the year 1881 he came to Estherville, and with his brother, Andrew, he put in a general stock of merchandise. At the end of three years he purchased the interests of his brother and for years carried on the business along. He was always successful with his undertakings, and a few years ago retired from the business and moved the stock to Huntington.
He was married August 25, 1885 to Emma Coon, of this city, and to this union there was born one son Romaine, who still resides here, and is employed in the general offices of the Rock Island System. Mr. Sondrol was an active member of the order of Free Masons, and served in an official capacity. For fourteen years he served as treasurer of Esdraeldon Commandry. He was also a member of the Eastern Star Chapter of this city and of El-Kahir Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Cedar Rapids. Mr. Sondrol was also a very active member of the order of Elks in this city.
The remains were brought to this city for burial, arriving this morning. The funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church, Thursday afternoon at two o’clock, and interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery under the auspices of the Masonic Order.
