A.C. Snyder, A Pioneer and A Civil War Veteran is Dead

An old pioneer soldier, A. C. Snyder, who has resided almost half a century north of this city, passed away at the Birney hospital on Monday lat at the extreme old age of 88.

He is one of the last of three members of the G.A.R. post. When we first purchased the Enterprise we wrote a brief history of all the members then residing here. The data was obtained by an interview with each veteran.. We give below the record of our old friend, Mr. Snyder. He was a recent visitor in this office and some of these statements were verified at that time.

Alfred C. Snyder enlisted at Paxton, Ill., September 15, 1864, in Company B. of the Eight Illinois infantry. His company was at once sent to the front and from the time they landed at New Orleans they were in the thickest of the fight. Mr. Snyder saw hard fighting at the Spanish Fort shortly after he entered the service and was on the firing line at Bleakley. The captain he served under at Bleakley was awarded a medal by a special act of Congress for his bravery during this battle. The day Lee surrendered his regiment was on gunboats in front of Mobile, and as the boats neared the city, shots were fired. In response to the shots white flags were raised all along the line, the Union troops took possession of the city. At that time, however, the soldiers of neither of the armies knew of the surrender of Lee. After being mustered out Mr. Snyder returned to his home at Paxton where he resided until he removed to this county twenty-two years ago.

The funeral services will be held this afternoon from the M.E. church and the pallbearers have been selected from the members of the American Legion. Rev. WinterStein will have charge of the services and interment will be made in the East Side cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 27, 1932)
