Former Resident of High Lake Dies; Rites Held
Wallingford – John Oudes, 83, former High Lake Township resident, died at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fla., at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Bradenton, Fla., with Rev. Schreiber officiating.He had been suffering from hardening of the arteries and on May 2, he fractured a hip and died of pneumonia.
He was born June 23, 1886, to Jan and Neltje Zeeman Oudes in Holland. His mother died when he was three and his father died when he was nine. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Holland.
He worked on dairy farms in Holland and Germany and came to the U.S. in April 1914, coming to Estherville where an uncle, G. Zeeman, lived. He continued working on farms.
He served in World War I and was stationed with the Army of Occupation, returning to the U.S. in June, 1919. He was a charter member of the Norris Kasa American Legion Post at Wallingford.
On Aug. 27, 1919, he was married to Ada J. Anderson and lived on the A. J. Anderson farm until 1936 when he retired. They spent the winters in Florida and the summers at Walker, Minn., until 1960 when they moved to Florida. On Oct. 11, 1966, the couple moved to the Good Samaritan Center at Estherville. They returned to Florida in October 1967 and became residents of SunCoast Manor Nursing Home, Bradenton, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, one half brother and cousins living in Holland.He was preceded in death by an infant son and a brother.
Burial was in the Veteran’s section of Memory Gardens, Ellenton, Fla. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 20, 1970)
