R.R. HUDSON DEAD
Passed Away This Morning at Four o'clock
Was an Early Settler of This SectionRichmond Reed Hudson, an old and respected citizen of this city, died at his home on North Fourth street this morning at about 4 o'clock.
Richmond R. Hudson was born in Lyon county, Wis., March 22nd, 1852, and was nearly 54 years of age. In early boyhood he moved to a homestead in Martin county, Minnesota, where he grew to manhood, attending the public school and assisting on the farm during the summer season. In this way, and from his efforts he acquired a better than average education, and at about the age of twenty-one years commenced teaching school and taught for several years in Martin County.
The writer attended school in Emmet township when "Dick" Hudson was teacher. During the years he was teaching and for a few years after he was fitting himself for the ministry, which he entered, as a minister of the M. E. church, in which capacity he labored for a few years, having charges at Toledo, Garrison, and Vinton. He returned to Estherville in the early 80's and made his home here since.
On June 9, 1878, he was married to Mary E. Crumb, of Emmet, to which union 8 children were born, being Mrs. Chas. Dayton, of this city; Mrs. H. C. Darland of Emmetsburg; Mrs. Ardale Severs [R. Dale Seevers], of Oskaloosa; Lela, Howard, Ethel, Harold and Hubert Hudson, of this city. Mr. Hudson was a member in good standing in the Brotherhood of Yeoman, in which he carried $2,000 life insurance. We have known Dick Hudson since our early boyhood days. We have always known him as a good citizen, a kind husband and an indulgent father. Of late years he has been poor health and a year ago it was thought he would not recover, but his undaunted will power carried him through. The trouble with which he has been afflicted and which caused his death was a kidney and bladder affliction.
The funeral arrangements have not yet been made and will not be definitely known until his daughter arrives from Oskaloosa.
The family have the sympathy of the entire community. (Estherville Vindicator and Republican, February 21, 1906)
