A.G. Metzger, Pioneer, Died Last Sunday

Death came to another pioneer resident, Andrew George Metzger on last Sunday [May 19, 1940] afternoon after a long illness. Mr. Metzger was always an active man and spent 50 years of his life in Estherville. In the early day he was one of the city’s leading business men.

The writer had known Mr. Metzger for the 50 years he has been in the city and in all that time we have never heard of his having a single enemy. In business he was pleasant and agreeable. With him we can safely say “The customer is always right.”

Mr. Metzger was born on June 14, 1858 at Buffalo, N.Y. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Schumacker Sept. 18, 1885. The young couple resided in Algona and Mason City before moving to Estherville in 1890.

The deceased is survived by his widow and three daughters, Mrs. J. A. Cummings of Spencer, Mrs. T. T. McConnell of Springfield, Mo., and Miss Evelyn of Lincoln, Nebr.

The funeral services were held from the Mahlum and Anderson funeral home Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. A. L. Schrick officiating. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 23, 1940)
