Geo. W. Murray Dies Suddenly
Well Known Farmer and Stock Man in Emmet County and Over Many States

The community was severely shocked on last Sunday when it was announced that George Murray had passed away at 3 o’clock on that afternoon. He had been about the streets the day before and was at the Elks home Saturday afternoon and evening. It was at the Home that he first felt the trouble which caused his death. The Elks have been playing volley ball in the Gym and on Saturday evening Mr. Murray entered the game and played for a short time. He felt some trouble about his heart and some faintness. He at once stopped playing and in a short time went to his room in the hotel. Medical attention was called but they could do nothing to revive him. On Sunday he was no better and his daughter Kathryn who was in New York, was sent for. About 2:30 he went to sleep and apparently was sleeping nicely. Death came at 3:15. Mrs. Murray had intended to leave that evening for New York to spend the remainder of the winter with her daughter there.

Mr. Murray came to this city in 1907 from Kossuth county. He purchased a large tract of land just east of this city and erected thereon as fine a set of buildings as any in the county. He had been in the cattle business before he came here. However, he was a great admirer of horses and he soon had the farm stocked with the best that money could purchase. He was a very diligent man and made a great success of his work. He sold the farm in 1919 and went to Texas that winter. He returned here and purchased a cottage on Spirit Lake where he resided in the summer, coming here and taking rooms in the Gardston in the fall. He was a genial fellow, well met, and this made him a man who was well liked by all who knew him. While he was apparently a quiet, easy going man he was known by his friends as being a man of a nervous temperament. He was a man who will be greatly missed by his friends.

George Wells Murray was born in Sheridan, Ohio, on March 12, 1861. His parents died when he was fourteen years of age and he came to Iowa to reside with an uncle and aunt at Wellsburg. He attended Cornell college from which institution he graduated in 1881. From there he went to Kansas City where he was engaged with the K.C. Bridge and Iron Company. After leaving there he went to St. Paul where he was engaged in the grain exchange. He was united in marriage on November 27, 1892, to Frances Gaines. They came to Kossuth county to reside, and from there they moved to this city. There were two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Murray, John who has been here with his parents and Kathryn who resides in New York City.

The funeral services were held this afternoon from the Chas. Keating home. Mr. Murray was a Shriner, and Elk and also belonged to the M.W.A. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 18, 1922)
