Mrs. Murray Dies at 101
Mrs. George (Frances) Murray, former Estherville resident, died yesterday at the age of 101 [102]. She had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Fred (Katherine) Hamer at Yerington, Nev.Mrs. Murray and her husband lived for many years on a large farm east of Estherville across the highway from the farm where Jno. E. Greigs now live and Mrs. Murray still owned the farm at the time of her death. Funeral arrangements have not been completed but it is believed she will be brought here for burial in Oakhill cemetery where her husband is buried.
Survivors are Mrs. Hamer and two grandsons, John Murray and John Hamer. A son, John G. Murray, preceded her in death. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 20, 1964)
Frances Murray, of Yerington, Dies at 102
Yerington – Lyon County’s oldest person, Mrs. Frances Ann Murray, who would have been 103 years old next June, died Sunday at the Lyon Health Center. She had been in good health until a month ago.She was preceded in death by her husband, George Murray, in 1922 and by her son, John Murray, former airline pilot, in 1958.
She was born Frances Ann Gaines June 12, 1861 at Winona, Minn. She was educated in parochial schools there and was married to George Murray at St. Paul, Minn., in 1892.
The couple settled in Kossuth [Emmet] County, Iowa, where they engaged in farming. After the death of Mr. Murray, Mrs. Murray continued in active operation of the property until she moved to Nevada in 1944. At the age of 90 she returned alone to Iowa to check her property and to visit friends.
Mrs. Murray had many interests besides farming .She was an accomplished pianist, an active Democrat, and always kept abreast of world affairs. She recently attributed her active life to “avoiding doctors.”
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Katherine Hamer of Yerington; two grandsons, John Hamer of Yerington and John Murray Jr., of Dallas, Tex., two great-grandchildren and several nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Yerington The rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at the Freitas Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Hamer will accompany her mother’s body to Iowa for burial. (Reno Evening Gazette, Rena, NV, April 21, 1964)
