CHILD DIES IN DENTAL CHAIR ON SATURDAY
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Brood of Gruver Dies of Heart Failure, Funeral Held Monday
John Brood, the six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Brood, of near Gruver, died in the dental chair, in the operating room of Dr. S. G. Ewen's dental office Saturday afternoon just after one of his molar teeth had been extracted.
In an interview with a Vindicator and Republican reporter, Dr. Ewen said: "The boy seemed unusually brave for a lad of his age and did not seem afraid. I pulled the tooth without any difficulty and the boy did not make much fuss. After the tooth was extracted he leaned over the cuspidore and spit some blood from his mouth, then sat back in the chair and expired. Dr. Wilson was in an adjoining office and he was called at once as was Dr. Birney and they did all they could to restore respiration but all efforts were in vain."
This was a very unfortunate affair but no blame attaches to Dr. Ewen or to any one connected with the office. The boy had been a great sufferer from rheumatism over a year ago and it is believed that it left his system in a weakened condition and with a weak heart. While it was not manifested it is believed that having his tooth extracted caused quite a shock to him and was more than his system could stand.
John Calvin Brood was born on the 20th day of August, 1916, in Estherville, and died June 23rd, 1923, having attained the age of six years, ten
months and three days, and leaves to mourn his departure his beloved father and mother, two sisters and four brothers, three grandparents, a host of other relatives and a multitude of friends. The funeral services were held on Monday, June 25th, 1923, at the Gruver church, Rev. Dirks officiating. Interment was made in the Estherville East Side cemetery.
