Local Boy, 5, Killed In Mishap
Leo LeGrand Bowen, 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bowen, 707 South 12th street, was killed instantaneously Sunday afternoon at 4:35 when he was struck while riding a bicycle by a ton and a half truck driven by Edward Frank Schubert, Estherville.
Schubert was driving the truck south on South 12th, and the police accident report states the fatal accident occurred as the Bowen child entered the intersection of 12th street and Eighth avenue south from the west on a bicycle.
Cause of death is believed to have been a broken neck.
Schubert has been charged by city police for driving a truck with faulty brakes.
The Bowen child was born Feb. 13, 1951. Survivors include, besides his parents, one brother, Clarency Leroy, 7; a sister, Marilyn Marie, 10, and his grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Bowen.
Funeral arrangements include services at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church, the Rev. Eugene Olson officiating.
Friends may call at the Sternborg Funeral Home from 7:30 tonight until time of the funeral.
This is the first traffic fatality recorded here since Nov. 12, 1955, when Thomas Edward Nelson of Wallingford, died in the hospital the day after he rammed a bridge abutment with his car at the south city limits on Highway 17.
