Cora Martin Mahlum 1889-1973

Mrs. Henry Mahlum Rites Thursday in Estherville

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday for Mrs. Henry W. (Cora Martin) Mahlum, who died Sept. 24 at Good Samaritan Center, Estherville.

The Rev. Richard Pearson will conduct the services in Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Cliff Hedrick, Harry Jesperson, Raymond Juhl, Arnold Mouritsen, Louis Obye and Vermaine Sidles.

Cora Martin, daughter or Robert and Liza Martin, was born Nov. 24, 1889, in Butler County, Iowa.

She received her education in the schools of Butler County. She came to Estherville at the age of 18, following the death of her parents, and made her home with her brother on a farm two miles east of Estherville.

On Jan. 22, 1903, she was united in marriage to Henry W. Mahlum at the home of her brother. Mr. Mahlum had a furniture store and undertaking establishment which he operated for 37 years, retiring in 1945. He died July 29, 1969.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, taking an active part in all activities of the church. She was superintendent of Primary Department and was president of the Missionary Society of Ladies’ Aid. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mahlum is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Gutz of Laguna Hills, Calif.; one son, Ralph of South Pasadena, Calif.; one grandson, Robert Mahlum Gutz of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Mrs. Harvey Warren, Jr. of Chula Vista, Calif. Also surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Carrie Phillips of Cedar Falls, Mrs. V. E. Rogers of Hampton and Mrs. Florence Fitch of Humboldt. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 26, 1973)
