Well Known Local Lady Passed Away Wednesday Morning After Long Illness
Born in Scotland

After an illness of several months Mrs. George Lorimer passed away at her home on north Eighth street late Wednesday [April 16, 1941] morning. She was 71 years old at the time of her death.

Elizabeth Borthwick was born near Thorshill, Dunfriesshire, Scotland, on May 29, 1869. Her parents were gentlemen farmers of the middle class in Scotland and she was given all the opportunities afforded the children in this class. She received her early education in private girls’ schools in Scotland.

Together with her parents, Mrs. Lorimer migrated to America in 1881. The family located in the Scottish community near Emmetsburg.

A few years after coming to this country she was united in marriage with George Lorimer. Three children were born to the couple, George, Jr., and Margaret having preceded their mother in death. Mr. Lorimer died several years ago from injuries he received when struck by a car. One daughter, Miss Mildred Lorimer, survives her mother.

Mrs. Lorimer joined the local Presbyterian church in 1914, shortly after the family moved here to make their home. She was one of the organizers of the Presbyterian church in the Scottish settlement near Emmetsburg.

Although poor health for the past several years has forced Mrs. Lorimer into a life of retirement she always took an active part in the church and community affairs while her health permitted. Her many friends in this community have missed her from their circles and regret to learn of her passing away.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Lorimer home at 2:30 o’clock with the Rev. Claude Fausnaugh in charge. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, April 17, 1941)
