Mrs. Sophia Lehman Leo, another pioneer resident of this county, passed to that great beyond on last Sunday evening.
Mrs. Leo has been a patient sufferer since last March. In recent weeks her health has been failing more rapidly and death came to relieve her sufferings.
Mrs. Leo came to Emmet County with her husband, August, and family, in the year 1883 and settled on a farm northwest of this city, where they always lived until moving to this city a few years ago.
Mrs. Sophia Lehmann was born in Mecklenberg, Germany, on November 24, 1847. She was united in marriage to August Leo on July 24, 1867 and the young couple came to this country the same year, settling in Lanesboro, Minn., where they lived until moving here. Mrs. Leo has been an indulgent and attentive mother and has always kept her children close to her. There are three sons: Emil, August and Carl, and two daughters, Minnie and Elsie. All of the children reside here with the exception of Miss Minnie, who has a position in Des Moines, but still claims this as her home.
In all of Mrs. Leo’s long term of residence here, we have never heard her spoken of but in the highest terms. On the farm she had a wide circle of acquaintances, and as a neighbor there was none better.
The funeral services were held this afternoon from the home on North Seventh street, the Rev Fleisher of Dunnell, Minn., officiating. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 20, 1916)
Pioneer Lady Passes Away
Mrs. August Leo Dies at Home in This City Sunday Evening
Came to County in 1883
Reared a Fine Family of Three Sons and Two DaughtersAfter an illness dating from last March, death came to the relief of Mrs. August Leo, and she passed to her reward Sunday evening at about six o’clock at her home in this city, aged sixty-nine years dating from the 24th of November last. Funeral is to be held from the residence this Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. Fleischer of Dunnell. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery.
Her maiden name was Sophia Frederick Lehman, born in Mecklenburg, Germany, November 24, 1847. At the age of twenty in 1867, she was united in marriage to Mr. August Leo, and that same year they came to this country settling on a farm near Lainsboro, Minnesota, where they lived until 1883, when they came to Emmet county and settled on a homestead in Emmet township. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters, Emil, August and Mrs. Joy Horswell, of this city; Carl, of Huntington; and Miss Wilhelmina, of Des Moines. Some years after coming to this county, about twenty-six years ago, her husband died but with wonderful fortitude and frugality she endured the hardships incidental to pioneer life and prospered. Nine years ago she bought the Matt Archer home on North Seventh street and moved to this city to enjoy the comforts and rest she had so well earned, and where she lived until her demise.
Mrs. Leo was a remarkable kind lady, a splendid mother, and excellent neighbor. She was a true Christian and she was dearly beloved by all of her old time neighbors, and all join with the Vindicator and Republican in extending condolence to the sorely bereaved sons and daughters.
