Chas. Johnson Passes Away
Died at the Anderson Hospital This Morning After an Operation
Was Pioneer Settler Here
Has Record of Twenty-five Years With One Company in This CityOn the passing away of Chas. Anton Johnson this morning at two o’clock, Estherville lost another citizen who had resided continuously in our midst for over thirty years.
A few days ago Mr. Johnson was taken ill and it was decided he had but one chance for existence and that was to undergo an operation for appendicitis. He was rushed to the hospital only to find the operation had been put off too long and he was in a critical condition. He survived longer than it was expected he could and yesterday his condition seemed improved. His age was against him in his fight for life and he passed away in apparent contentment and in the same even temperamental way that had always been his.
“Charlie” as he was known by everybody has a record of which any one might well be proud. He had been in the employ of Northern Lumber co., and its predecessors for over thirty-five years of continuous service. This position has been held by his honest continuous faithful service to his employer, and it was a record of which he was justly proud.
Mr. Johnson was born in Emmeley, Denmark, June 25th 1845. His father was a Lutheran minister and Missionary to Greenland. At the age of 20 Mr. Johnson decided to try the United States as a home. He worked for the government at Keokuk for fourteen years at the canal as a diver. On June 11th 1877 he was united in marriage to Anna A. Bolsen. To this union there were five children born, two of whom are still living. Mrs. Lucy Bale and Miss Matilda Johnson both of this city. The deceased is also survived by his beloved wife and has two brothers and one sister living in Denmark. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 21, 1917)
The remains of Chas. Johnson were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery on Friday last, the Rev. Hock officiating at the ceremony. The services were held from the home on East Howard street. The floral offerings from relatives and friends were beautiful. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 28, 1917)
