WALLINGFORD, Iowa – Services for Francis Van De Walle, 70, of Wallingford, Iowa, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville. Burial is in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Armstrong, with military graveside services by Wallingford American Legion.
Van De Walle died Wednesday, April 10, 1996, at Holy Family Hospital, Estherville. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m., with a Legion of Mary rosary at 4 p.m. and parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
Francis Van De Walle was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Gridley, Iowa, son of Philemon and Gertrude (Mino) Van De Walle. He attended school at Maple Hill, Iowa, Lake Park, Iowa and graduated from Estherville High School in 1942. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for a short time. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served until 1945.
He married LaVonne Twito Sept. 28, 1946, at Jackson. The couple lived in Wallingford. He owned and operated Wallingford Garage for several years, worked for Wallingford Creamery, railroad and did trucking for several years, worked at John Morrell and Company for 21 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Catholic church, lifetime member of Veteran of Foreign Wars, Wallingford American Legion and Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Lavonne Van De Walle of Estherville; sons, Dennis Van De Walle and wife, Ann, of Estherville and Jerry Van De Walle, of Mesa, Ariz., daughters, Pat Olson and husband, Allen of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kathy Shonkwiler and husband, Sam, of Ames, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; brother, John Van De Walle and wife, Helen of Humboldt, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
