Isabelle Tweedt Valen, 1898-1971

Mrs. Lewis (Isabelle) Valen, 73, Estherville, died Wednesday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past year and a half.

She was born Jan. 29, 1898, in Ellsworth Township to Mr. and Mrs. S.K. Tweedt. She was educated in Story County schools.

She moved, with her parents to a farm near Huxley at the age of four. On Oct. 20, 1920, she was married to Lewis Valen at her parents’ home near Huxley. Following her marriage they moved to a farm northeast of Estherville where they lived until their retirement to Estherville in 1952.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Palestine Lutheran church near Huxley. She was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church and was active in the women’s organizations in the church.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis, Estherville; three sons, LaVerne and Robert, rural Estherville; and James, Estherville; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Arlene) Bygness, Sac City, and Mrs. Arvine (Shirley) Juhl, rural Estherville; 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three brothers, Edward Tweedt, Slater; Burney Tweedt, Huxley; and Roy Tweedt, Mount Sterling, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, one infant brother and twin infant sisters.

Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Englestad and the Rev. Oscar Engebretson officiating. Burial will be in Estherville Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at Reese-Henry Funeral Home, Estherville, from 1 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday.
