William J. Burrell, a resident of Emmet county for over twenty years, passed away at his home in Mankato, Minn., Saturday [February 3, 1940] morning after a brief illness. His death was caused from heart trouble.

William Jacob Burrell was born March 7, 1877, at Andersonburg, Penn. He received education in the schools of that city and later entered into his life’s work of farming, locating on a farm near Andersonburg. On Nov. 10, 1897, he was united with Miss Sarah J. Shields, of Blaine, Penn. They came to Grundy Center, Iowa, on March 1, 1910, and resided there four years. In 1914 they purchased a farm near Gruver, in Emmet county, and together with their family moved there. Mr. Burrell retired from farming in the fall of 1937 and moved to Mankato, Minn., where he has made his home until his death.

Mr. Burrell joined the St. Paul Lutheran church at Andersonburg when he was a young man of fifteen and was still a member of that church at the time of his passing away.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, M. E. Burrell of Estherville and Paul P. Burrell of Sumner, Washington, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Wee of Des Moines and Mrs. Paul Erlandsen of Mankato, Minn., and six grandchildren

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at the local Methodist church, at 2:00 o’clock. Rev. W. A. Ortmeyer will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. There will be short service at 9:00 o’clock Wednesday morning at Mankato, Minn. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 6, 1940)

Former Resident, William J. Burrell, Laid to Rest
William J. Burrell, a resident farmer of Emmet county since 1914, passed away last Monday. He was well known in this county having been an active farmer. He lived here until 1937, when he retired from the farm and moved to Mankato, Minn.

Mr. Burrell was born in Andersonburg, Pa., on March 7, 1877, where he received his early education, later engaging in farming, and later farmed in Emmet county. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Shields of Blaine, Pa., November 10, 1897. The couple came to Grundy Center where they farmed for four years, coming to a farm near Gruver in 1914.

Mr. Burrell was a man of many friends. He was a good farmer and a good business man. He was an active worker in anything that was for the betterment of the farm or the farmer.

He is survived by his widow and two sons, M. E. Burrell of Estherville, and P. P. Burell of Summer, Washington, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Wee of Des Moines and Mrs. Paul Erlandsen of Mankato, Minn.

The funeral services were held from the Methodist church at 2:30 on Wednesday, the Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer officiating. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 8, 1940)
