Fred Butler Dies Sunday at Home Here
Paralytic Stroke Causes Illness and Death of Well Known FarmerFred Oren Butler, 64, prominent farmer of the Estherville community, died Sunday [January 29, 1933] noon at his home southwest of this city after a week’s illness of complications resulting from a stroke of paralysis a year ago. Mr. Butler had lived in the Raleigh community and near Estherville since 1906. He was well known as a real neighbor, one who could be called upon in time of need. He was especially devoted to his family and his wife and children all of whom were with him during his last illness will feel his loss with great keenness.
Mr. Butler was born on April 28, 1868 in Benton county, the son of William and Delilah Ridge Butler. He was married on Christmas day, 1883 to Avis Viola Shannon. The young couple lived in Black Hawk county until 1902 when they moved to Manitoba Canada. They returned to the states however, after a year and a half, moving to Graettinger in 1904 and to Raleigh in 1906. During the family’s 23 years there, Mr. Butler was prominent in school and church affairs. He was director and president of the district school and a generous supporter of the church. In 1929 the family moved to the farm home where Mr. Butler passed away.
There are surviving the passing of this esteemed man his wife, four sons, Phillip of Estherville, Ralph, Wayne and Clarence at home, and one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Whiteford of Superior. Their second oldest son Roy died at Camp Dodge during the World war and is buried at Oak Hill cemetery. One brother Elmer Butler lives at Yakima, Wash., and is expected there for the funeral services which will be held Thursday afternoon at two-thirty from the Methodist Episcopal church with Rev. W. A. Fred Butler died Sunday noon at his farm southwest of Estherville after an illness of nearly two years.Fred Oran Butler was born in Vinton county, April 28, 1868, and was the son of William Butler and Delilah Ridge Butler. On Christmas Day December 25, 1883, he was married to Avis Viola Shannon. The couple made their first home in Black Hawk County, moving from there to Winnipeg, Canada, in 1902, on a farm. In 1904 two years later they moved to Graettinger and from there to Raleigh. They live here for twenty-three years where Mr. Butler served as director of the school and president of the school board. He also took an active part in the church. In 1929 they moved to their present farm southwest of the city.
Mr. Butler is survived by his wife and five children, Phillip, Ralph, Wayne and Clarence, a daughter, Mrs. Ernest Whiteford of North Superior. Another son, Roy, died at Camp Dodge also one brother, Elmer Butler, in Washington, and three grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 o’clock from the Methodist church with Rev. WinterStein officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, February 1, 1933)
