Little Miss Barnes Died in Minneapolis

With saddened hearts this community is called up to mourn the death of one of Estherville’s most popular young ladies who after a prolonged illness of ten weeks was taken from the sight of her beloved parents and sister who can hardly be reconciled to their loss. Erma May McArdle was taken ill while employed as a very competent in the H. Oransky store and for nearly ten weeks was a patient sufferer from one of the most painful ailments of mankind, rheumatism. She seemed to be improving and was able to be moved around but she contracted a severe cold which, to a person in her weakened condition, rapidly developed into pneumonia and in less than a week from the time she was besieged with her last ailment she passed away. Eyes were filled with tears and all who knew the patient loving sufferer were saddened by the thoughts that the cheerful friend of a few short weeks ago was gone.

Erma was well known having been assistant at her father’s store and later at the store where she remained until her illness.

Erma May McArdle was born March 17, 1891, at Watertown, South Dakota and died August 2, 1913 at her home on North 6th street at 5:50 p.m., age 22 years, 6 months at time of death. Erma graduated from Estherville High School in the year 1910. She has resided in Estherville since a babe of six months with the exception of four years. She leaves a mother, father and two sisters, Ethel and Dorothy to mourn her untimely death.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church this morning at ten o’clock. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and showed in what high esteem the deceased was held in this city. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, August 6, 1913)

Young Lady Called
Miss Erma May McArdle Passed Away Saturday Afternoon
Death Was Due to Pneumonia
Had Grown to Womanhood in Estherville – Graduated from the High School in 1910

The people of Estherville were inexpressibly grieved when they learned of the death of Erma McArdle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. A. McArdle, last Saturday afternoon. Although she had been ill for almost three months, and while her family and friends were prepared for the worst, still when the news came that she had passed away, it came as a great shock to all. She had been a sufferer with rheumatism for ten weeks, when she was attacked by that dread disease, pneumonia, although she made a brave fight, in her weakened condition she was unable to withstand it.

Erma was always a favorite, and one may say she numbered her friends by her acquaintances. During her illness she had every care that loving parents and fond sisters could give her, but all to no avail. It pleased the all wise ruler of providence to take her, and the efforts of human hands counted for naught.

Erma May McArdle was born March 17, 1891, at Watertown, S.D., and died at her home on North Sixth St. August 2, 1913, at 5:50 p.m. aged twenty-two years and six months at the time of her death. Erma graduated from the Estherville high school in 1910. She has resided in Estherville since a babe of six months with the exception of four years. She leaves a mother, father, and two sisters, Ethel and Dorothy to mourn her untimely death.

The funeral was Wednesday morning from the Methodist church, Rev. Ginn, her former pastor officiating. Many beautiful flowers gave evidence of the love and esteem in which she was held. The services were largely attended by sympathetic friends and neighbors. The Eastern Star of which Mr. and Mrs. McArdle and Ethel are members, attended in a body. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery.
