Mearl Barnes, a dear little miss of six years loved by all who knew her died at Minneapolis, August 2, 1913 of scarlet fever.

Mearl did not make her home here but in her many visits to this city with her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Will Barnes, she won a place in the hearts of all who knew her by her cheerful loving disposition. She was remarkably bright for one so young and her knowledge and mastery of words was wonderful.

Mearl Barnes was born in Minneapolis in 1906 and died in that city August 2, 1913. She was first attacked with smallpox while visiting in this city during the week of Chautauqua. Recovering from this she went to Minneapolis to visit and while at the home of a friend was taken suddenly ill with scarlet fever and diphtheritic throat and died in five days from the time she was stricken with the disease.

The body was shipped to this city and services were conducted at Oak Hill Cemetery Sunday afternoon by Rev. J. D. Vannoy.

The many friends of the grief stricken parents and relatives extend their heartfelt sympathies to them in their bereavement. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, August 6, 1913)

Merl Barnes
On Saturday last the L. H. Barnes family received the sad word conveying the sorrowful news of the death of little Merl Barnes, their grandchild, at Minneapolis. It had been but a few days since the bright little one had been in their home for her usual summer visit, and to think of the mighty hand of death having reached out for this child, seemed almost beyond their power of comprehension. While here little Merl had a light case of small-pox and it was thought her recovery had been complete, but it had left her unprepared for that dreaded children’s disease, scarlet fever, and this combined with diphtheria, which she contracted about the same time, soon weakened her and she passed away.

Merl Barnes, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Barnes was born in Minneapolis on the 25th day of April 1906 and died in that city on the second day of August 1913. Her remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery on Sunday last after a brief service conducted by the Rev. J. D. Vannoy at the last resting place of the much beloved child.
