Stephen H. Pelton was born August 23, 1830, at Sherman, N.Y., and died at the home of his eldest son, C. E. Pelton of Tacoma, Wash., September 30, 1911 at the age of 81 years, one month and 7 days. He came to the state of Illinois with his parents when about the age of fourteen and served an apprenticeship and learned the wagon makers trade, which he followed for many years.Mr. Pelton was married to Francelia Brigham at Coral, Illinois, May 18, 1854. Six sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pelton. Three died and were buried on the West Side where the father was buried. Three are living, namely C. E., of Tacoma, Wash.; F. E., of Comanche, Iowa; and Arthur C., of Sycamore, Illinois. The deceased also leaves his companion who is now in Washington, two brothers and one sister, namely; Wm. Pelton, Mrs. Sarah Andrews, both of San Jose, Calif., and his youngest brother, Harvey of Fredericksburg, Iowa. Of his direct descendents besides his three sons he is survived by three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Pelton had two brothers who served in the Civil War one Adison giving his life in that service and until the death of Stephen H. was the only break in the family.
Mr. Pelton moved to Waverly, Iowa, from Illinois in 1856 where he worked at his trade until 1868, when he moved to Fredericksburg and in 1882 came to Estherville settling on the farm east of town occupied by him until last spring, when having sold the farm he vacated to the purchasers.
He was converted in early life and united with the Baptist church in which he gave his life to the service of the Master. He was a charter member of the organization of the Baptist church in Waverly and also a charter member of the Baptist church in Estherville. While at Fredericksburg he served as a deacon in the church there and served in that capacity in the Baptist church in Estherville from the time of its organization until his death.
It was decided to bring his remains home and bury them in the beautiful lot of his own selection in the cemetery where he had buried his three sons. His son, C. E. Pelton, arrived Monday, October 23, with the remains, and was joined here by the other two sons. The body was taken to the house of Mr. H. B. Colt on south Seventh street and the funeral services were conducted yesterday in the Baptist church at 10:30, a memorial sermon being delivered by the pastor of the Federated Baptist church.
A brother from Fredericksburg, and a nephew from Emmetsburg were in attendance at the funeral. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 25, 1911)
