Mrs. William Deming [Emma Nichols Deming]
After an illness of long duration, Mrs. William Deming passed away at her home on the west side of the river Wednesday [May 26, 1937] afternoon at four o’clock. Mrs. Deming has been afflicted with cancer and has been treated in the best institutions of the country but to no avail. The disease was of long standing before its severity was discovered. Not a stone had been left unturned to give her all the finest of medical attention.

It has been known for some time that there was nothing to be done but to give her all the comfort possible and this had been done.

Mrs. Deming graduated from our public schools in 1907. While in school she was considered an exceptional pupil. She was not only a fine student but her pleasing ways made her extremely popular with all the students and her instructors. After graduation here she attended two conservatories of music in Minneapolis and St. Paul. She also taught in the rural schools of this county for two years. As a teacher she was considered very efficient.

Mrs. Deming was born in Boscobel, Wis., a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Nichols on April 17, 1888. She moved that year to Potter, N.D., where the family resided only a brief time. From there Mr. and Mrs. Nichols came to Estherville. Mr. Nichols engaged in the newspaper business as editor of the V. & R., which is also the oldest paper in the county.

In 1912 she was united in marriage to William Deming of this city and to that union there were three children born, Kathleen, May, Georgia Adelaide, and Wm. Nichols Deming.

Mrs. Deming was a member of the Episcopal church of this city and also a member of the O.E.S. North Star lodge. She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and also past president of the Emmet County P.T.A.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters and a son, her father and mother, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 27, 1937)
