Mrs. Lyman Dead
Passed Away Friday Morning After Extended Illness
36 Years in Estherville
Was Sixty-three Years of Age at the Time of Her Death – Live Christian Life

Mrs. F. R. Lyman died Friday morning at 10:30 at the family home on the West Side after an illness of over thirty years, twenty of which were spent in Estherville. The death of this good woman removes another pioneer from our city.

Her maiden name was Mattie E. Ijams and she was born at Columbus, Ohio, on April 20, 1845, being 63 years, 4 months and 7 days of age at the time of her death. She was married to Fred R. Lyman, May 12, 1863, and moved to Jackson county, Minn., in 1864 and homesteaded near where the town of Jackson is now located. On their way from Columbus, Ohio, to Jackson they stopped in Estherville a day and met R. E. Ridley, Howard Graves and many of the old residents of this city. They remained in Jackson until 1870 and then moved back to Ohio. In 1888 the family moved to Estherville to reside.

Deceased was a devout Christian and a member of the Christian church of this city. There were seven children in the family, Naomi, Kate, Judson, George, Addie, Lydia and Lewis. Naomi died on April 20, 1881, aged 16 years and Lydia died in infancy August 19, 1881. Kate and Addie are still at home and together with their mother during her many years of illness. For thirty years she was never left alone at any time. Judson lives at Columbus, Ohio, and George resides on a farm southeast of this city. Besides the remaining children and husband deceased leaves five sisters, three brothers and a step-mother to mourn her death. The children were all present at the funeral Sunday afternoon except Judson who was unable to come.

Rev. Utterback of the Christian church, conducted the services. The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, August 19, 1908)
