Found Dead in Bed
Last Friday [July 22, 1892] morning Mrs. M. Larbig [Esteena] , residing southwest of town a few miles, was found dead in bed by her husband who had arisen, built a fire and called her several times but received no response. The family consisted of the husband and wife and two boys, sleeping up stairs, and Mrs. Larbig occupied a room separate from her other members. Not knowing but that the lady might be resuscitated, a messenger was dispatched to town for Dr. Anderson who went out, but nothing could be done to restore the spark of life that had gone out several hours before. Coroner Myrick being notified of the mysterious death, a jury consisting of J. D. Willson, H. A. Jehu and F. L. Trapp, was secured, and with Attorney C. W. Crim, as clerk, repaired to the Larbig place for the purpose of discovering, if possible, the cause of the woman’s death. It was learned by the jury that Mrs. Larbig was enjoying good health the day before and just previous to retiring Thursday night made arrangements to do some washing the following day. Dr. Anderson stated that he believe death to have been caused by heart disease, and after taking the testimony of the husband, the oldest son, Chris, and Mrs. Crawford, a neighbor, the jury rendered a verdict to the effect that in their opinion that death was caused by heart trouble superinduced from natural causes. Mrs. Larbig was fifty-two years old, and the mother of three children, two boys and a girl, the latter being married and not present at the time of death. The dead woman was highly esteemed in the community in which she lived, and her sudden taking away has caused general sorrow wherever she was known.
