Died – Salisbury – At Bay View, Michigan, on Sunday, Sept. 5th, 1897, Mrs. Martha J. Salisbury, of pulmonary consumption, aged 43 years, 5 months and 18 days.
Martha J. Henderson was born at Rock Island, Illinois, March 17, 1854. She was married to Dr. R. W. Salisbury in 1888, who was then a practicing physician in Estherville. They resided here until May 1896, when they moved their residence to Galesburg, Ill. This change was made thinking it would be conducive to her health as she was then in the first stage of pulmonary consumption. Last October it was thought best to try a southern climate and they moved to Ashville, North Carolina, where they spent the winter and spring and in June, on account of her failing condition, they came north again, remaining in Rock Island until a few weeks ago, when they went to Bay View, Michigan. Everything that could possibly be done for her was done, but her disease baffled all efforts and skill and finally conquered. She passed away on Sunday, Sept. 5th, and her remains were brought here for burial, arriving on Wednesday morning. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church by Rev. H. G. Pittinger, assisted by Rev. J. B. Trimble, presiding elder of the Sheldon district. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and all her life was a vigorous and faithful worker for the interest of the church. Her body was laid to rest in West Side cemetery beside her two little children. She leaves a husband, and little Floyd, an adopted son, one brother, M. L. Henderson, of Rock Island, Ill., two sisters, Mrs. Mary Quick of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Mrs. Lucy A. Morey, of Galesburg, Illinois, to mourn her loss. (Weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, September 9, 1897) [Note: in 1898, Floyd’s biological mother reclaimed him “as she was now able to care for him” and the boy was returned to her in southern Iowa.]

Death of Mrs. Mattie Salisbury
The sad news reached this city Monday of the death of Mrs. Mattie Salisbury, wife of Dr. R. W. Salisbury, former residents of this place but now residing at Bay View, Michigan. Her death was not wholly unexpected by relatives here as she had been gradually sinking away with consumption for the past year. The doctor had given up his practice to travel with Mrs. Salisbury in hopes of finding some climate that would spare her life, but all in vain. They spent the greater portion of the past year in the south and only came to Bay View a few weeks ago. The remains arrived this morning and the funeral will be held in the M.E. church at ten o’clock this forenoon. Deceased was a noble, kind-hearted woman and has many friends in this city who extend the hand of sympathy to the bereaved husband. The body will be laid to rest in West Side Cemetery beside her two children who have gone before. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, September 8, 1897)

Death of Mrs. Dr. Salisbury
The sad news reached this city Monday morning of the death of the wife of Dr. R. W. Salisbury, Sunday [September 4, 1897] at Bay View, Michigan, where she had been for some time past. The body was brought to this city Wednesday and was buried in the Oak Hill cemetery by the side of two little children who died several years ago. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church, Rev. Pittenger officiating.
The deceased had been in very poor health for many years and had frequented the most noted health resorts in hopes of recovering her health, but all in vain. She was afflicted with consumption and of this dread disease she died despite medical skill and climatic change. Her life was such as to endear her to all of her acquaintances and many there are who mourn her untimely death. She leaves no children. A husband and parents are left to mourn with sympathizing friends, the death of a devoted wife and loving daughter. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, September 9, 1897)
